Went for a ride with my husband today! It was a bit challenging with the hills, but I had some rests waiting for him to catch up to me. ;-) Also, we walked up both sides of the short, steer hill at mile 1 and part way through mile 4. Good workout… I want to do it again!

Since I haven’t been out there in a while on the bike and I have a run or speed session tomorrow, I just did 30 minutes. Followed it up with a few running drills (skipping, high knees, butt kicks, etc.) before I left the park.

Part of this ride didn’t read, because we moved over to the school for a bit where the loop was too small for the GPS to really track. So, that’s why I slowed towards the end. I was going relatively easy, though, because I STILL feel my quads from Sunday’s activities.

I went out to the location of the duathlon I am eyeballing. I did one loop on the bike course. In the race you complete 3 loops. Right in the beginning there is a killer (to me anyway) hill. I did make it up, but you can see by comparing the elevation and my speed how difficult it was for me. I made it, though, and the 3rd and 4th miles do help with recovering from the hills in the first 2 miles. I feel I could have done it again, barely, but we were running out of time, so I just did a casual ride through the park, avoiding large hills. :-) Here’s the info just for the course loop portion:

Just to throw another issue into the mix, I recently learned I will have an art opening near St Louis (4 hours away) the Friday before this duathlon, returning the night before the race. So, I could do the duathlon, or perhaps I could stay in St Louis and extra night and have some fun. Hmmm….

The wind was steady at 25 MPH, and gusting at 32 MPH. It would hit me every time I crested the hill, which was about 23 times. I want to list some things I was happy with about this ride, and some things that irritated me, if only for the sake of looking back later to see how things have changed. I’ll start with the negative, so that I can end on a good note.
Negatives:
- People standing or casually walking and not moving to one side so I had to go up on the grass repeatedly. One woman even stood there, right in the middle of the trail, staring at me and smoking a cigarette. I’m wondering if perhaps cyclists aren’t supposed to be on the trail and just on the road? But still…
- The phone rang during my workout, and I had to stop on the uphill. I would have ignored it, but I use it for GPS recording and so I had to make sure I was still timing/recording my workout. I suppose that’s a reason to consider getting a Garmin.
- I’m irked by the way my bike shifts gears. At first I thought it was just me, because I was moving up or down more than one gear at a time, but I’m starting to think it’s the bike’s fault as I’ve done my best to move only one gear at a time. I hate when the pedal lurches forward as I’m trying to make it up a hill, and every now and then it decides to shift itself up or down on it’s own. Grrrrr.
Positives:
- I’m getting faster. Even though this still was a pretty slow pace, it’s better than last time, and might have really been even faster considering I had to slow down often when other people were on the trail and when I stopped to check my phone, and because I didn’t start or stop the GPS at the same time I started/stopped cycling, so it also recorded some idle time.
- Cycling is becoming less and less tiring both cardiovascular-wise and leg muscle-wise. I wonder how much all this will improve over the next month.
To Ponder:
- I covered more feet of ascent today than there are in the whole bike leg in the duathlon I’m eyeballing. However, mine were all in little spurts of less than 50 ft of ascent at a time, 3 per mile. In the duathlon course, it’s 3 loops with one little hill and one long hill (about a mile) than climbs 100 ft each loop. I don’t know how the little short hills will compare to the long hills. I’m hoping that I will convince my husband to head out to the park where the duathlon takes place with me this weekend so I can give the loop at least one shot and see what I think.
- I still wish I had some kind of cage or something on my bike pedals.

I can see the GPS had be inside the loop that I did, so I am betting I went a tad farther/faster than it recorded me at. Either way, this ride was pretty much about trying to learn how to get up a hill without putting it in the highest gear, standing up, and giving it all I’ve got. Goal achieved!
This path at the park is about 1/3 of a mile all the way around, and it’s on a hill so you’re nearly always ascending or descending. In fact, I had less than 1 minute of riding before I was headed uphill. I expected that I’d wind up slowing so much I’d come to a crawl and then stop and have to go down the hill and try again, but alas, I made it up the very first time! So, I estimate I went up the hill 15 times and was able to get up it each time without having to stand or pump so hard that my HR skyrocketed. It was a fairly easy ride in fact! (At least compared to the 14 minutes of madness last week!) A couple times, my mind even drifted off and I realized I was neglecting to shift up as I was cresting the hill.
I still haven’t hit a good rhythm, nor have I really mastered switching gears and when exactly to do so, but I’ve got the basic idea now and I think I can get better with practice.
After I stopped to shut off the GPS recording, as I joke I decided to run just to experience those lead legs I hear about. Hah! I did about 1 minute of jogging, and I felt like I was lifting my legs way too high, my shoulders were up in my ears, and I was pumping my arms a bit too much yet going nowhere. Really, I don’t know how fast I was going, but I DO know this will talk some getting used to.
After a quick stretch, it was off to the gym for strength and more stretching.
