Today is the first day I didn’t wake up feeling stuffy since catching the cold. I fell asleep early last night, and woke up early, and the first thing I thought was, “Get up and go run!” I hope I can start getting up early to run more often. This week I have a lot to do, and it with highs in the 90’s it would really help to get the exercise in early.
I kept it to just 1.5 today because I think if I go for too long too soon, I will have an injury. I’ve lost a lot of muscle after 2o days without consistent training from the NY trip and the cold. Ready to get back to it, though.

Hot humid morning, (79 degrees, 74% humidity) taking it easy because of the weather and because I woke up a bit stiff from yesterday’s cycle. Also, the pace is slower because I had to stop at intersections. I am going to have to come to terms with the fact that my pace slows so much in hot humid weather. I’m just not sure if I can reasonably increase mileage over the summer, or if I should just try and maintain until it starts to cool off. As usual, I’ll just play it by ear!

Busy Busy! I went out midday to run. My phone died, (which records me) so I did another couple laps and went home. I have other workouts I have yet to log here. Soon, hopefully!

The break from running did the trick! Pain-free and getting back towards my usual pace. Nice evenly negative splits, too. Glad to be back on track with the running!

Right away, I started feeling the pain in my side. I was grateful for every uphill! I tried to take it easy, and just finish regardless of if I was walking or running. It was a beautiful day, so I tossed my ego aside and just decided to be out there doing my best, feeling good. The pain stayed manageable. I walked through water stations and thanked all the volunteers. Sometime during the 2nd half of the run, the pain went away. I was nervous it would return, but it did not. The final .5 I picked it up, sprinted past a few people, and finished feeling great. Was by far not my best time, but I had fun.

Can’t believe I am celebrating 3 miles, but I did it without major pain. I started to feel my side a couple times, but it didn’t get bad and it went right away. Even had enough to give it a big kick at the end. I think it helps if I lengthen my stride on the downhills and not try to break (which was my first reaction with the pain) and try and bounce as little as possible. I’ve iced the area just in case.
I had already signed up for a 4 mi race tomorrow. Goal: Get through it carefully without injuring myself any further!

Don’t know whats up with me! Side stitches hit me a half mile into this. It seems to only hurt on the flats and downhills; I can sprint uphill with no problem. So, the last mile, since it wasn’t going away even with walking, I decided to just do hill repeats and go slow downhill.
Hopefully this will clear up, like, now! I’ll be at it again tomorrow.

I ran [some of] the 10k this morning. I started off feeling great, and then really early in the race shortly after mile 1, all my abs (not intestines, my ab muscles) cramped up. I tried to keep running and just breathe deeper, but it wasn’t working. I tried standing tall, stretching my arms up, pushing air into my belly… no improvement. So I walked, and then I tried walking slower, and then I got to the aid station at 1.5 and had some water. I was close to the start now because we’d looped back around… I could just head back, find my hubby, and get my pancakes. Instead I started jogging again. There was a hill in front of me, and by the time I was at the top I was OK, but freaked out and disappointed that I’d already lost so much time.
I decided to walk the aid stations a little. I was doing OK again, getting more on track, and then came the aid station at mile 3. I looked at the port-o-potty and immediately had to pee. I didn’t want to lose any more time, but I also wanted to enjoy the run. I decided to suck it up and wait in line. It took 3 minutes until I was back running again.
Now I just felt like I’d never recover, and it was hot and humid to boot. I was so far behind now, that almost everyone around me was walking. I ran all the tough hills, though conservatively. I also wound up walking a couple times again. I don’t know anymore if I was mentally defeated, or if I really needed to walk. I remember thinking that I at least wanted to ensure that I would feel good on the downhill at the end and have a good finish.
The last couple miles I kept loosing track of where I was. At one point I thought I had .5 left to go, and then saw the 12 mile sign for the half marathon, therefore I had over a mile to go. I also could not quench my thirst even though I was drinking more than on my training runs.
Finally I got to that great, long, downhill stretch. I was ready to push it in now. I could see where we were going to make our last turn off main and head to the finish. This is the part I always enjoy… but those ab cramps came back on my right side. I didn’t want to walk through the finish, I couldn’t! So I kept gingerly running with the pain increasing on each step. I finished with a chip time of 1 hour, 19 minutes, 37 seconds… 10 minutes slower than my first 10k last year and slower than any training run since, um, I can’t even remember when. I have never walked so much of any run, training or race.
I am really disappointed, though I am trying to get myself to be proud of the fact that I did finish. I think I am going to do a 4 mile race next weekend to try and boost my spirits. After my training was impacted by that chest cold, I am a little more prepared for a 4 mile run than a 6.2 mile run at this point.
Below is my recording from my phone. It took me a little while to get through the chutes, get my water, medal, and chip cut off before I was able to shut it off. It also wasn’t totally in sync with the mile markers on the course, and thinks I went almost 7 miles. Maybe that’s why I kept getting confused?

Even though I did it slowly, I still did it! This gives me a little more confidence going into the 10k this weekend. I don’t know that I’ll have a fast (for me) race, but I’ll finish.
It was very humid again today… please cross your fingers that there is less humidity on Saturday… and please no storms! I DO want to run this thing! Also, the blister on the arch of my foot came back/started hurting, so I did the last half of it pushing through that. I did decide to walk during mile 5 at 4.5 miles because I needed a breather. I also stopped for a second at a few intersections.
One thing that I do feel I have on my side is the fact that today’s run had over 700 feet of ascent, cumulatively. The race does have one challenging looking hill at the beginning and is certainly not flat, but overall it totals just shy of 400 feet of ascent. If I can make it over that first big monster hill, I should be good! Check it out here: 10K Map
OK, time to finish getting ready for my opening, and the event tonight!
